AIDS: Still "Renting" Space in 2006

Yes. I am a sap - I cry at lots of things, good songs, commercials, anything that tugs at my heart strings ever so slightly. Over ten years ago I saw the show "Rent" when it first appeared on the Great White Way (whatever that means). I had almost forgotten about it completely until I turned on my television this evening and yep, there it was - the big screen version. And the tears began...

Within four and a half minutes I was sobbing. Because while ten years may seem like a long time ago, we haven't changed all that much. It is so infuriating that even though we know how AIDS is transmitted and  we know that wearing a condom is the best protection against contracting HIV sexually, we still have an epidemic. And not just in Africa. Here, right in the good ol' USA.

But no, conservatives still spread ugly lies about the effectiveness of condoms, people are still ignorant and think that AIDS is a punishment for those who have sinned, and then there are the people who engage in risky behaviors just because they think that they are invincible - or worse, they just don't care.

I know that it shouldn't take a movie for people to become outraged, but if it's the one thing that galvanizes a generation a world to take action, then so be it. Have we been paying attention? Have we seen last week's Primetime exposing how African American women in this country make up more than 50% of new HIV cases here? Have we taken an HIV test in the last ten years? Have we used a condom with our current or our last sexual partner?

Please...I beg you. Tell me why we insist of turning our backs to something so huge and so very preventable. I desperately need to know.
