Accidental Adultery: Oops, I Dated a Friend?

I recently read an interesting post called "Accidental Adultery" by Jay in Toronto on her blog, Kill the Goat.  I don't know... have you ever had this problem?

...yes, admittedly, there is an empty seat at my table. And when I look up, you are funny and charming, and also interested in seeing the Andy Warhol exhibit at the AGO. But when you pick me up, you bring flowers and kiss me on the cheek because I turned when I saw that you were aiming for my lips.

Um, is this a date?

Because you kinda forget to tell me if it was.

I have to admit that if I have this problem, it's usually the opposite... you're single, and you think it's a date, but then suddenly it isn't.  Or actually, what happens is you've been asked out on the I-don't-want-to-commit-to-asking-you-out-on-a-date date.  I'm just going to ask you over to watch my film short, and then I'll decide if it's a date at some undetermined point in time at my discretion.  Bah!

When I have a boyfriend, I personally find it so much easier.  All you do is drop the "my boyfriend" sentence.  As in, "MY BOYFRIEND has that exact same pair of socks!"  Or, "Yeah, MY BOYFRIEND loved that movie."

Honestly, if I'm hanging with a guy, like at a party or something, and he doesn't drop the "my girlfriend" and then later I find out he has one... Well, hm.  I mean, I don't assume he was trying to start something extracurricular, but I do tend to think he was enjoying the attention.

Bottom line:  Accidental adultery could only happen to me in the case where I found myself hanging with some guy who neglected to mention his girlfriend.  Because I would make sure it was clear I had a boyfriend before I hung out with a new guy as friends.

What do you think?  Check it out; she's got a great comment thread going, too.
