Using a Condom? Here's How

I am a big believer in sex ed refreshers...yes, everyone needs a little refresher of information every once in a while - especially when it is something as important as sex. So, welcome to my class. Today's lesson: "How to Use A Condom".

1. You must use a new condom for every sexual act. Carefully unwrap the condom. If the penis has a foreskin, pull it back before putting on the condom.

2. Put the condom on before the penis gets near any body opening (to help avoid exposure to any body fluid that can carry infection.) Always handle condoms gently. Put the condom on as soon as the penis is hard/erect. Be sure the rolled-up ring is on the outside. And leave space at the tip to hold semen when you (or your partner) ejaculates.

3. Squeeze the tip gently so no air is trapped inside. Hold the tip while you unroll the condom...all the way down to the pubic hair. If the condom doesn’t unroll, it’s on wrong. Throw it away and start over with a new one. (Yes - I said it, get a new one and start all over again).

But condom effectiveness isn't just about how you put it on, it's also about what you do with the condom before it ever gets on his penis, on you (for the men out there), or in you.

4. After sex (after ejaculation) ,while the penis is still erect, hold the condom firmly at the base of the penis to keep it from slipping off while withdrawing from your partner. Wrap the condom in a tissue and throw it in the trash. Don’t flush it down the toilet. Afterwards, wash your hands with soap and water or a waterless hand washing product. Never re-use a condom. Use a new condom for every new sexual act.

Latex condoms are 98% effective when used correctly and consistently (sometimes we forget about that whole "consistency" thing). Remember it only takes one time without a condom to become pregnant . Oil based lubricants (baby oil, vaseline, food products, even baby powder) cannot be used with latex condoms - as the oils will break down the condom and reduce its effectiveness. If you are going to use a lube, it must be water-based (and they do sell these in drug stores as well as in sex/erotica boutiques).

Also, don't forget to check the expiration date on your condom. If it has passed, throw it out and get a new one. Be nice to your condoms - keep them in cool, dry places, practice using them (so that you know how they work before you have sex), open them carefully (watch those nails!), and love them (as I do).

I am absolutely committed to using condoms - for every act, no matter what. When it comes to being sexually active, they are the best protection we have against STDs and the best protection against pregnancy (without a prescription).

Any questions? If not, class dismissed...
