Menstruation - There is a Reason Why We Get a Period

Having a period is an essential component of being female (at least until menopause). But now there's a lot of hype about a new pill on the market that allows you to continously cycle your birth control so that you wind up period-free. (Now that may make detecting pregnancy a little bit more difficult, huh?)

I was reading the Reproductive Rights Blog and Slate which mentioned the pill, Lybrel, on the docket for FDA approval early next year. As I read about it, I knew that I had to share my feelings about good ole' Aunt Flo. While sometimes having your period at the prom or during your wedding (both of which happened to me) can be a royal pain, it is such an important part of being female. It's what separates us from the boys and it explains and acknowledges our incredible potential and capacity to become pregnant, should we decide to try.

I cannot imagine a girl missing the female rite of passage of teaching a friend, roommate, or bunkmate how to use a tampon. The suppression of menstruation seems like it goes against everything innately female. I for one don't want to suppress my period. Granted, I didn't exactly miss it when I was pregnant, but I had other things to deal with...that being said, after giving birth, having a period again made me feel like a woman (and not just the vessel for a developing fetus). So that's where I am at the moment, and I don't see myself changing.

On another note, I would just like to congratulate New Jersey on passing a law that would allow gay couples to marry and a second kudos to New Jersey for refusing $800,000 for abstinence only until marriage education. Yay New Jersey!!!
