"I Hate Your Boyfriend": Do You Tell a Stranger?

I hope Logan won't mind me bookending on her post yesterday, "I Hate Your Boyfriend": Do You Tell A Friend?  I totally agree that sometimes you have to have an honest sit-down with a close friend.  If you approach it right, I think it's definitely better to get things out in the open.

But what would you say to a stranger or an acquaintance about their boyfriend?

I was sitting in a college class once, talking to a new friend about my boyfriend, when across the room a guy says loudly, "That guy?  I HATE that guy - he's an [insert impolite word here]."  Um, HELLO, I'm sitting RIGHT HERE?

The fact is most people have people who don't like them.  Most people have at one time or another made a mistake or ticked someone off.  And most of those people have people in their lives that care about them.  And who don't really care about your negative opinion.

Look, if my boyfriend's cheating on me, I want to know.  Heck, if he cheated on you, I wouldn't mind knowing that either.  But aside from that and like felonies, what he did in the past is the past.

So I just don't get what I'm supposed to do when someone says something bad or mean to me about my boyfriend.  Clearly, I don't agree, or I wouldn't be in the relationship.  (Can I get another HELLO?!)

Has this ever happened to you?  How did you deal with it?

Or on the other hand, have you ever felt the need to say something bad to a stranger or acquaintance about their boyfriend?  Why?
