Homophobia the "Hard-Away"

Sometimes you trick yourself into thinking that when it comes to sexuality, people aren't as ignorant as they used to be. And then, you wake up to the news that a pro-athlete has publicly made a disgustingly offensive homophobic remark.

Tim Hardaway (a retired basketball player from the Miami Heat) recently said, "I hate gay people," and other related statements. I mean really, it's 2007. And it's not like there isn't a huge out gay community in Miami (where he played). And (according to Hardaway's own words) it's not like he has never been on the receiving end of prejudice. What the hell was he thinking?

Well, I know what NBA commissioner David Stern was thinking when he removed Hardaway from the All-Star game this week. He was thinking that no one as stupid and ignorant as Hardaway was going to represent his league. Kudos to you, David Stern!

Though I want to gag at the thought of how many people still buy into homophobia, I am pleased about one thing. Hardaway's remarks (and for that matter, Isaiah Washington's situation too) initiate a larger conversation about sexual orientation and sexuality, in general. It's just unfortunate that this dialogue had to emerge from such an ugly ugly public statement.
