What to Expect When You're A Valentine

Tomorrow morning I will be appearing on the Today Show to talk about Valentine's Day Expectations. When I was first asked, "How should women manage their expectations on Valentine's?", I wanted to blurt out (humorously of course), "Don't have any!"

Yes - there is some truth in that. Technically, Valentine's Day should be like any other day during the year. We shouldn't need to have a holiday to express that we care, love, like, or have a crush on someone else. We should be able to share our feelings every day of the year, but sadly, that's not the case. People wait months and months for V.D. (that's Valentine's Day, not venereal disease).

Believe it or not, some surveys are saying that men pay more attention to Valentine's than women. (That's because we are starting to see that it's really no big deal.) For men, V.D. is often the excuse they've been waiting for - they can show their true romantic colors to their partners.

For a successful Valentine's Day, I propose the following:

Don't expect any major surprises. (Especially if you haven't given your partner any clues about what you want.)

Give and receive - we should be taking care of our partners too!

V.D. isn't just for romance. When we were kids our friends were our valentines. That should still apply today.

You don't need to spend a lot of money on Valentine's. A little quality time (tech-free - no Blackberries, cells, etc.) with the people you care about is really what it's all about.
